Hi, and welcome to GZ! Well, to start with, I agree that it always depends on where the company is. Do you know where you'll be working?
Of course there are plenty of options that meet the requirements you mention. Yuexiu is well-developed with a large expatriate community and excellent facilities for living and enjoying life. It is, however, the oldest part of the city and there are relatively few new apartments.
Er Sha Island is also popular with foreigners and has a very central location which can be useful if you're not sure where you'll be working. Draw-backs, however, include not being near any Metro station and being very expensive.
Tianhe has plenty of quite new apartments that start at about 250 USD per month. It is the Central Business District and has good transport links. It also has huge electronics stores, malls, supermarkets and several decent restaurants. The area has its fair share of expats, but to be honest it isn't the liveliest part of town, with all the best bars, pubs and clubs over in Yuexiu.
You might also consider the suburbs. The Metro runs right down to Panyu, where Clifford Estates represents a major expatriate living area. Prices here are much more reasonable than in the northern city suburbs.
Apart from where you'll be working, another key factor is going to be budget. I recently had a client who wanted a new, 3-bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms, a dining room that could accommodate dinner for six, a large living room, a study and a utility room. She also wanted it to be within a short walk of her office. Her budget was just 5,000 HKD, which she hoped would cover the rent, management fee and all bills...
