Bars...... again
Posted by Sentinal (361 days ago)
Sorry.... I know it's been asked before but I'm still having problems finding a good watering hole. I visit GZ fairly regularly and usually head off to the Garden Hotel area for a drink. Sadly, I'm not 18 anymore so the delights of techno and trance music (I think that's what they call that ear splitting ****) doesn't really do it for me. I have been to the Hill Bar, Elephant and Castle and the Irish Pub behind the Garden Hotel which are all a step in the right direction but what I'd really like to find is a regular that has a friendly crowd with a good atmosphere and decent music (songs with something resembling a melody..... remember them?).
I know this is Guangzhou and I should probably just pop another reality pill but I thought I would ask anyway.

There is a bar that I think will give you what you're looking for. It's a Canadian local bar called Strange Brew and it's down the road from the Ramada hotel on the river across from Er Sha. Just tell the taxi Hua May Da Zhujian.

Hmm, do you have an address for this place? Or a telephone number? Thanks.

I discovered a very nice new place called Qba in the Westin Tian He, you might give it a try! Great drinks and nice salsa music (live band)

I agree with you Sentinel. My husband and I had given up on Guangzhou until we found Senses in Tian He. Excellent food, staff, atmosphere and bar. The problem with QBA at Westin is that the music is too loud and the staff are not properly trained. You also have that boring hotel feeling. You should really check out Senses around the corner. We had a great party there on Canada Day. You wont be disappointed.

Hi - I'm new posting on this site (ie. I have not posted then changed my login name and posted again on the same thread) and as a former restaurant manager and a person who appreciates good service, I can assure you the best experience you will consistantly have eating in Guangzhou is at the Paddy Field. Try it. Go to all the restaurants mentioned on any of these posts each week for 5 weeks straight, and you'll know what I mean. Paddy is simple and consistant. Good service. The staff and owner will remember you.

sewage, do a search for the phone number here on asiaxpat. I am pretty sure I posted it ages ago. Also, look in thatsprd, the free mag you can find in expat places.

I heard there is new irish bar called "Hooleys" in Tianhe. Does anyone know address?

Hooleys could be a nice bar, but my group of about 8 has stopped going as the service is sooooo bad. Even when the place is empty it is bad. The food is ok, but as business is slow the portions keep srinking. So it is not worth going

Ok, here's what I'm looking for!
I'm 27, but not into the whole techno scene, so am not interested in the majority of the chinese clubs (babyface, yes et al)
I've tried cave, paddys, hill bar etc, and while they all have their charms I'm getting a little burnt out on them...
So any advice on a bar/club that plays 'real' music (any rock clubs?!) where the drinks are under 30rmb (I know...) and has a healthy mixture of ex-pat and locals!
I miss the smaller cities where everyone knew eachother, and you'd find all the younger laowai in two bars!
Come on Guangzhou, surprise me!

Sounds like C Union could be your place. Look it up on That's PRD magazine.
