Lobster
Posted by MianFei (726 days ago)
I want lobster broiled and served with lemon and drawn butter. And, I want the Chinese price, not the Garden Hotel (or whatever) price! Any ideas? Last time I tried it in a Chinese place, it came out with a really strong soy-based sauce, which I think is a really shameful waste. Besides telling me where to find it, could somebody also tell me pin yin of what to say in order to get it served this way?

Try South Sea Fishing Village at Tianhe sports village tel. number 387968888.
Otherwise go to Huangsa wet market, buy lobster and grill it yourself, works out much cheaper if you have a big oven.
If you do not speak Chinese, bring a friend who does.

Oh, I went to that South Sea Fishing Village once, if that's the name of it -- inside the sports stadium area on the east side, the side towards Japan Fusion. I had lunch there, and had three dishes because I was scoping the place out for a possible banquet. The food was not good! Very strong sauces, veggies overcooked, and some of the seafood actually questionalbe freshness! I like the place near Haizu Square, between the river and Landmark Canton hotel. The banquet ended up being at that place, in a private room overlooking the river. It's pricey though, and I wouldn't count on them to cook the lobster in the western way.

Mien Fei, I feel your pain.
I take a little tablet and play pictionary evrywhere i go. Of course I have an unfair advantage as a designer I draw quite well. I can usually express what I dont know in Mandarin that way.
1st, Aint no such thing as drawn butter in the PRC. That said you can get them to take those little butter tabs from breakfast, for toast and scrape em and melt em into a ramiken. I did this once when I took this crazy beautiful girl who worked for my agent out to dinner to thank her for taking me shopping on Christmas day in Fuzhou.
2. the Lobster or Long Xia I told them steamed and showed them steamed dumplings and the girl translated it to the wait staff. It came out pretty much as I wanted it. They destroyed the medium rare turf part of my planned dinner though. Good steak is almost as hard as lobster in China.
Personally i kind of like the way they cook the lobster in most places Ive been in China though so except for that particular time when I wanted western style food more for her and becasue it was Christmas and I wanted that taste of home, Im ok with it.

Minor details. I've decided to cook some lobster myself. But, if you grill or broil the lobster, how do you kill it and prepare it? Do you drop it in boiling water first, then cut it open? Yes, I can relate on the steak, too! The steak must come from old dairy cows that have outlived their use for dairy production. You can get pretty good steak from Metro, that fresh Mongolian beef in the back room or the frozen Qing Dao beef. So, maybe the only solution is to cook your own. . . .

Sorry for the late reply, Mianfei. Yeah, Huangsa is really good for getting your hands on good lobsters. I actually found fresh Maine lobsters there a few weeks ago, and they were charging less money oer 500 grams then those tough old rock lobsters!! You should pay no more than 100 yuan for 500g.
Becuase I'm used to east coast martime style, I simply boil the lobster in very very salty water. Put a handful of salt in the water for each lobster you cook (get a big pot too). DOn't worry about killing them first. They don't feel pain, and that sound you might hear that sounds like "screaming" is only the air escaping for their shells. Don't cook them too long. 10mins is good for a 500g. lobster. Enjoy with melted butter and baguette bread!
