Area around Guangzhou International Economics College
Posted by gww2138 (67 days ago)
My wife and I are talking to this college about teaching jobs. I'm told that the college is in the "white mountain area" in the Guangzhou suburbs. We're in the states right now, so can't check out the neighborhood ourselves. Can anyone tell me anything about this area? Many thanks

I think they are talking about Bai (white) Yun (cloud) Mountain.
Ask what sort of transport they have to the city.
And don't take the job until they give you the email addresses of at least two current teachers there so you can get the current scoop on what the place is like.
Are you a qualified teacher? If so, you'll get a lot more money working at places like Clifford School, Hua Mei or the International Schools. But you'll have to work more.
Subscribe to the email lists here:

and you'll learn a LOT about teaching in China. They were invaluable when I was a newbie in China back in 1999.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the good advice, Ruth. Fact is, we did all the stuff you suggested. You're right about the money--fact is, we don't want to work that hard! I just retired from 35 years of law practice, and want to slow down. The private language schools actually want a 40 hour week. This positions-my wife and I have accepted-involve a max of 20 hrs class time a week. Minimal further olbligations. So, see you around.

I lived in GZ, or just south of GZ in Panyu, for 4 years. I sure don't miss the air pollution, but miss the people, food, shopping and lifestyle.
Let me know if you need any more tips after you arrive. GZ's a pretty friendly place and good fun.
Your wife will want to check out www.gwic.org
The expat women know ALL about shopping and getting about in GZ. Good fun to meet women from all over the world.
Also, see if you can get those less than 20 classes(not hours) a week in 4 days so you can have 3 day weekends.
