Utahloy school in Dongguan
Posted by Dongguan (1167 days ago)
about and hour and a half ride away from Guangzhou and a good 40 - 60 minutes ride to Dongguan. HUGE campus, GREAT facilities, international clientele, works mostly as a boarding school (due to the loaction of the school), has a few hundred children down there.

Very good reputation Ive met some of there teachers at the branch in Zhencheng. You could do a lot, lot worse. Only problem is you wont be "in the city" as far as culture and night life go. I make 20,000RMB a month here and sometimes it stretches a bit near end of the month.

Okay to work in or okay to send your kids to?

Your question may be more complex than you realize. I think a lot of whether a school is "okay" depends on age of your kids and what your goals are. For instance, do you hope they will be able to stay on the same track as their peers in your native country, or is that less of a concern to you? Even a second year primary schooler could feel hopelessly lost for a year in your native country if she or he had not met the standard first year goals while overseas. Another question is, what educational goals do you aspire to? Assuming you want them to enter a university, in what continent, because different continents and countries have different standards and admissions procedures. Then, need to balance what they will gain and lose from their overseas experience and therefore what they will bring to the university admissions game? The other issue is peer group. Do you want your child to go to a school where she may be the only native English speaker, where she may be the only child with light hair, or where creativity may not be valued? You need to visit the school, talk with the headmaster, and then observe some classes to begin to discern what the school is like.

Ok to send my children to

All international schools in GZ have their boosters and their critics. In my 4 years in GZ, I never found an school that everyone was happy with. They'd have their kids at one and slam the other.
cheers from Ruth, whose kids did online ed at www.sides.ca

They have professional teachers.School is 15 minutes taxi drive from ZengCheng city center. It`s located in a HUUUGEEE garden with a lake.Beautiful nature.Sports ground, big swimming pool, pingpong, table tennis, library, etc
Very clean.
Safe in the school, outside is same as everywhere.
Difficult to describe it,you`d better see it;you can take a bus to Zengcheng and then a taxi to the school.Don`t take the motorbikes. They are sometimes nasty.
As I know, most of the kids` families live in Dongguan. There are boarding students too.

Maybe there's 2 schools there then?, as i know of children that go to a school there that isnt a boarsing school, i don't want my kids to stay there all week, want them to come home every day after school.

There are two Utahloy schools. One is at Golden Lake in Guangzhou and one is near Dongguan

Thanks, Yes i know there is one here in GZ, but if i was to move to dongguan and send my children to the school there i was asking if it is ok because heard some bad reports saying most of the teachers are from Brazil(nothing against the Braziliens) and that the standard isnt very good. And wanted to hear some more opinions.

i know a few teachers from the school in DG and they are from UK, HK, Brazil, America etc... so I think there is a healthy mix. I know most expats in DG send their children there, even the distance is quite far.
There is a new player on the DG market though. QSI recently opened a school in DG and the location is quite convinient, as most expats live in or around the New World Garden and from there it is a five minutes disctance to the QSI building. On the other hand side, there is not yet a lot of Children registered with them as far as I heard. Might be because they are just new?

I personally know teachers at the DG and there are 1 or 2 brazillians. Most of the teachers are credentialed to teach the IB program. the school is really, really top notch, and its the best school in the area unless you want to send kids to GZ proper

As Ruth points out, different parents look for different things . . . I think to judge the quality of teaching you probably need to sit in on a few classes and see for yourself. That teacher from Brazil might be fantastic, or she might be awful! It would be even better if your kids could go with you to visit the short list of potential schools so they can get a feel for how they might like it and fit in. Another factor is the distance (and time) of the commute they will have to do each day. Some families also live in HK (more choices) or GZ (cheaper) and have the parent commute to the job.

Hello everyone!
I know this is an old thread but I wanted to see if I could continue the discussion instead of starting over. Our factory is in Hengli Town in Dongguan. My family will have to live close enough to commute every day. I will be with my wife and our 3 and 5 year old children. Ideally, I want to live in an expat community near other families. I would also like access to an international or bilingual school. The recommendation seems to be Dongcheng district in Dongguan but I have been eading about Utahloy school in Zengcheng. Is there a good expat community in Zengcheng now? Does anybody know how far ZC is from Dogcheng or Hengli districts in Dongguan?

I suggest you look very, very carefully at UISZC. Rumours abound about financial difficulties, disgruntled staff and angry parents.

I agree wholeheartedly with the above comment!

The school has gone through a complete rebirth. New staff and some major capital works. Brand new Head of School who has an excellent reputation. A major expat housing development is under way there so the school is in good position to take advantage of this. I recomend you go and have a look.

Utahloy International School Guangzhou is an IB school, teaching kids to be life long learners and they offer a wide range of languages.
My kids love it !

I now have my two kids at the Zeng Cheng campus. The teachers are fantastic and communication between school and parents is excellent. Ill tell you I looked around and not much in Doguan. QSI is an option and very convenient location but is horrible. No outdoor area just two floors of a high rise. Although, they are supposed to be building a new campus. I have heard that this has been promised for over three years and nothing yet. I would recomend Utahloy anytime.
